This image from one step beyond by madness has some mayjor signifiers of the Ska genre such as the phone boxes which conote england we also see this in british programes such as Doctor Who and This Is England 86. The costume of the man in the image is plane black suit which is used alot in other Ska music videos, we also use this in our music video. The man in the image is skanking which is a dance move invented by madness which was done at all Ska gigs in the 80's and early to mid 90's but these days you only see it done by the old Ska fans.

This is what would be associated with SKA music videos. A bleak basement with grafiti on the wall this makes it look unprofessional, which is what the Ska society like about the genre. Most Ska bands are un signed or not well known they like being individual.

Costume: Buttoned up check shirt, jacket and turned up jeans.

This is Ben lambert one of our actors he is also part of our media group. Costume: Trilbe hat, braces, fred perry top and army boots.

Shot Ideas

I took these images off the music video "Oh No" by Marina and the Diamondsand these are relevant to our idea with the monopoly money and the image of the camera under the glass is an idea we may use in our music video. We are planning to do money dropping out of or on top of an umbrella this goes with the title of our track which is money grabber.

In lesson time me and my experimented with stop motion, what we did was used monopoly money to spell out the phrase " Money Grabber" this is because that is the name of the song and it is used alot in the song. What we did was we took short clips of us slowly assembling the letters annd tehn we sped the footage up to make it look better. These images are what they looked like and we noticed that where it says how much each note is worth from a distance it looks like an eye this could add continuity to our music video.

We chose an urban backround because we all agreed that it was iconic to the Ska/Punk genre. the costumes we used were checked shirts, smart/casual suit, army surplus boots, braces, trilbe hats and shiny trousers for the girl.

This is one of out actors Isobel bailey, she is also the the same actor who stared in out AS thriller, so we know she is a good actress and will work well. She also has a keen fashion sense will which will again help with costumes.

This is one of our actors Jack Sauverin, he is a big Ska fan so this will help his ethusiasim in his perfomence on our music video. This also helps us to get costume for the video. Costume: Black suit, black skinnt tie and a trilbe hat.

This is our costume ideas for the music video, these costumes are what the audience of ska music are most likely to wear according to our research.

This is us attempting the maddness walk as seen
on the music video "one step beyond by the maddness"

Tuesday 14 September 2010

This is the music video for one step beyond by the madness. The Madness is an iconic ska band which triggered a new generation of Ska music. We plan to use the walk they do in this video and also the one when they are sitting in a line on the stairs. We also plan to use urban backrounds in our music video and may get some idea from the many shots in this video.

History of Ska

The Ska music genre originated in jamaica in the late 1950 's . And was the precursor to rocksteady and reggae. Ska combined elements Caribbean mento calypso with american jazz and rhythm blues. In the early 1960 's it was the dominant music genre of jamaica and was popular british mods. Later it became popular with skinheads.
Music historians typically divide the history of ska into three periods: the original Jamaican scene of the 1960s (First Wave), the English two tone ska revival of the late 1970s (Second Wave) and the third wave ska movement, which started in the 1980s (Third Wave) and rose to popularity in the US in the 1990s.
